Garry Hynes and Martha Clarke Win Joe A. Callaway Awards

Garry Hynes and Martha Clarke have won the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation’s 2009 Joe A. Callaway Awards for excellence in the crafts of directing and choreography.

Hynes won the award for her production of The Cripple of Inishmaan at the Atlantic Theater. She founded Ireland’s Druid Theatre Company in 1975 and has worked as its Artistic Director from 1975 to 1991, and from 1995 to date. From 1991 to 1994 she was Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre, Dublin. She won the Tony Award for her work on The Beauty Queen of Leenane.

Clarke won the award for her work on Garden of Earthly Delights, which was revived last season. Her other credits include Vienna: Lusthaus, Miracolo d’amore, Endangered Species, An Uncertain Hour, The Hunger Artist and Vers la flame.
