A foot injury has forced Louis Zorich to withdraw from Classic Stage Company's currently running production of Ivanov. His role as Lebedev will now be played by the show's director, Austin Pendleton, who is also an award-winning actor in his own right and who has previously performed as Lebedev in a 1990 production of the play at Yale Rep.

Ethan Hawke stars as Anton Chekhov's first great dramatic anti-hero in this production, which uses a translation by Carol Rocamora. The cast also includes Joely Richardson (Anna), Juliet Rylance (Sasha), Glenn Fitzgerald (Borkin), Annette Hunt (Avdotya Nazarovna), Stephanie Janssen (Babakina), Roberta Maxwell (Zinaida), George Morfogen (Shabelsky), James Patrick Nelson (Kosykh), Anthony Newfield (Guest), Jonathan Marc Sherman (Lvov), and Anne Troupe (Gavrila).

Pendleton was honored with a 2007 Drama Desk Award for being "a Renaissance man of the American theatre," and also received a 1970 Drama Desk for his performance in The Last Sweet Days of Isaac. He was Tony-nominated for his direction of The Little Foxes in 1981, and has consistently gone back and forth between acting and directing in his long and varied career.
