Larry Kramer, gay rights advocate and The Normal Heart playwright, married his partner David Webster in an in-hospital ceremony on July 24, according to The New York Times. The wedding had already been planned before Kramer was admitted to the intensive care unit for surgery for a bowel obstruction. Two dozen of the couple’s friends and relatives attended the ceremony.

Kramer has been the recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature as well as two Obie awards. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1993 for the play The Destiny of Me. The Normal Heart is set to become a motion picture in 2014.
