Chad Kimball and Montego Glover will star in the new Broadway musical Memphis, to play the Shubert Theatre, with previews beginning September 23 in anticipation of an October 19 opening. Tony nominee Christopher Ashley will direct, with choreography by Sergio Trujillo.

The musical is based on a concept by George W. George and features book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro, with music and lyrics by Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan, who will be making his Broadway debut. DiPietro and Bryan also collaborated on the musical The Toxic Avenger, currently running at New World Stages.

Set in the segregated South of the 1950s, Memphis follows the fictionalized life story of white radio disc jockey Huey Calhoon (Kimball), who falls in love with both rock & roll and an electrifying black singer, Felicia Farrell (Glover). The musical was developed in previous engagements at La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre.

Kimball and Glover both originated their roles in the world premiere of Memphis at the La Jolla Playhouse. The cast will also include Derrick Baskin (Gator), J. Bernard Calloway (Delray Jones), James Monroe Iglehart (Bobby), Michael McGrath (Mr. Simmons), and Cass Morgan (Gladys Calhoun). The company also includes Jennifer Allen, Brad Bass, Tracee Beazer, Kevin Covert, Hillary Elk, Dionne Figgins, Rhett George, John Jellison, Sydney Morton, Vivian Nixon, John Eric Parker, Jermaine R. Rembert, LaQuet Sharnell, Ephraim Sykes, Cary Tedder, Danny Tidwell, Daniel J. Watts, Katie Webber, Charlie Williams, and Dan’yelle Williamson.

The creative team will include David Gallo (set), Paul Tazewell (costumes), and Howell Binkley (lighting), and Ken Travis (sound).
