Nicholas Gonzalez to Lead Cast of NYMF Musical Rio

Casting is set for The New York Musical Theatre Festival production of Rio, featuring book, music, and lyrics by Mitch Magonet and Joey Miller. Scott Faris will direct the production, which will perform at Theatre at St. Clement’s, July 10-18.

In this re-invention of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist set in modern-day Brazil, 12-year-old Pipio hunts for his lost mother among the street-kids, gangs and drug-lords that rule Rio’s favelas – the toughest slums in the hottest place on Earth.

Nicholas Gonzalez, who recently starred as Oliver for Gallery Players, will star as Pipio, with the cast also including Gilbert Glenn Brown, Jose Candelaria, Nina Crupiti, Kelechi Ezie , Dennis Kenney, Tanesha Ross, Mercedes Ruiz, J. Manuel Santos, Lelund Durond Thompson, and Zurin Villanueva, Nik Walker.

The creative team includes Charity Wicks (music director), Kate Dunn (choreography), Ron DeJesus (co-dhoreographer), Colin McGurk (set design), Ken Billington (lighting consultant), David Kaley (costume design), and Janie Bullard (sound design).
