Richard Dreyfuss, Robert De Niro, Gene Hackman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Al Pacino, Sam Rockwell and Meryl Streep are among the luminaries who have been interviewed for HBO’s documentary I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale, which will premiere June 1. Richard Shepard has directed the film.

Cazale is perhaps best remembered for his work in such films as The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II, in which he played Fredo Corleone, as well as The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter. Prior to his work on the screen, Cazale was a fixture in New York theater and he won an Obie Award in 1968 for his work in Israel Horowitz’s The Indian Wants the Bronx.

In addition to interviews with his colleagues and artists who have been inspired by his work, the documentary includes rare video footage and archival photographs.
