The award is given annually to an emerging woman theater artist; past winners include Julia Jordan, Brooke Berman, Lynn Nottage, and Karen Zacarias.

Lewis, who began her career as a poet and short story writer, is also the author such plays as Infinite Black Suitcase and Song of Extinction. She is also the founder of the War Plays Project.
