Peter and the Starcatcher Asks You to Save the Mermaids

The cast of off-Broadway’s Peter and the Starcatcher is helping to “Kickstart” the Coney Island Mermaid Parade in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

In a showing of mermaid camaraderie, the cast of off-Broadway’s Peter and the Starcatcher is lending a fin (and some pointy mermaid bras) to the Coney Island Mermaid Parade’s Kickstarter campaign.

The Mermaid Parade is a 30-year-old Coney Island tradition, described as “an American celebration of ancient mythology and hinky-tonk rituals of the seaside.” This year, however, the damage wrought on Coney Isalnd by Hurricane Sandy has left the parade $100,000 short of the funds it needs to produce the annual event.

The parade travels down Mermaid Avenue, Surf Avenue, and Neptune Avenue, and over the years has grown to host a crowd of over 750,000 people. The celebration also serves as a showcase for New York artists, featuring works by over 1,500 individuals from each of the five New York boroughs.
