Billy Joel to Release Memoir in June; Live at Shea Stadium to Get March CD/DVD Release and PBS Airing

Tony Award winner Billy Joel’s memoir, The Book of Joel, will be released on June 14 by Harper Collins, according to published reports. The memoir will discuss the writing of Joel’s many hits, his broken marriage to Christie Brinkley, and his struggles with depression and substance abuse, among other topics.

As previously reported, Billy Joel: Live at Shea Stadium will be released as a CD/DVD set as well as a stand-alone DVD and stand-alone Blu-ray disc by Sony Music on March 8, and will be seen on PBS’ Great Performances on March 9.

The concert, which took place in 2008, featured guest appearances by Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks, and Sir Paul McCartney, the latter of whom performed “I Saw Her Standing There” and “Let It Be,” two songs he wrote as part of the Beatles. Among the other selections are “Angry Young Man,” “My Life,” “Always a Woman,” “New York State of Mind,” “Allentown,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “Captain Jack,” “Goodnight Saigon,” “Italian Restaurant,” and “Piano Man.”

Joel’s music was used as the basis for the musical Movin’ Out, for which Joel won a Tony Award for Best Orchestrations.
