Lois Markle to Replace Myra Carter in Albee One-Acts

Lois Markle will replace the previously announced Myra Carter in Edward Albee’s The American Dream and The Sandbox, an evening of one-acts to be directed by the playwright at the Cherry Lane Theater. Due to the cast change, performances have been postponed until March 21, with a new opening date of April 1.

The American Dream tells a startling tale of murder and morality that rocks middle-class ethics to its complacent foundations. In The Sandbox, a middle-aged couple brings their grandmother to the beach one final time. Both works were originally produced at the Cherry Lane, in 1961 and 1962 respectively, and are part of the theater’s Mainstage Heritage Series.

Health issues were cited as the reason for the cast replacement. Markle, who will play Grandma, has appeared in several Albee plays, including Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf? at Trinity Square Rep, Three Tall Women on a National Tour, A Delicate Balance at Arizona Theatre Co, and Albee’s Women at Old Globe. Other credits include Broadway productions of True West, Something Old, Something New, A Warm Body, and Calculated Risk.

As previously announced, the cast will also include announced George Bartenieff (Daddy), Judith Ivey (Mommy), Kathleen Butler (Mrs. Barker), Harmon Walsh (the American Dream), and Jesse Williams (the Angel of Death).
Albee, who turned 80 on March 12, is being celebrated by numerous theaters this season, which also included the recent productions of Peter & Jerry at Second Stage, and the world premiere of Me, Myself, and I at the McCarter.
