Allen is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Lydia Grant in both the movie Fame and the television series it inspired. As a performer, she received Tony Award nominations for Sweet Charity and West Side Story. As a director, she staged Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in both New York and London, and her production of Twist - An American Musical recently concluded a run at the Pasadena Playhouse.
