Frozen Wins Big at the Academy Awards

Oscar night was a winning evening for Disney's stage-bound animated hit Frozen, which walked away with statues for both of the categories in which it was nominated. The film kicked off the night with a win for Best Animated Feature — a category in which it also triumphed at the Golden Globe Awards — besting its four opponents, The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest & Celestine, and The Wind Rises. This victory was followed by a win in the category of Best Original Song for the viral power ballad "Let It Go," cowritten by three-time Tony-winning composer Robert Lopez (Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon) and his wife, Kristen Anderson-Lopez. The song beat out the category's three other nominees, which included "Happy" from Despicable Me 2, "The Moon Song" from Her, and U2's Golden Globe Award-winning song "Ordinary Love" from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. The film's Tony-winning star Idina Menzel, who will soon return to Broadway in the new Tom Kitt/Brian Yorkey musical If/Then, performed the number for the ceremony's live broadcast.

With Robert Lopez's win for Frozen's "Let It Go," he becomes only the 12th individual to be an EGOT: winner of the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award.

Tracy Letts' screen adaptation of his Pulitzer Prize-winning play August: Osage County did not share in the animated film's fortune. Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts earned the film's only nominations in the leading and supporting actress categories, respectively. Streep, in her 18th nomination, lost to Cate Blanchett who won for her leading role in Blue Jasmine. Roberts was also bested in her category by Lupita Nyong'o who won for her performance in 12 Years a Slave.
