Playwright Pam Gems Has Died

Tony Award-nominated British playwright Pam Gems has died, according to a posting on the website for United Artists, which represented her. She was 85.

Gems received a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical for Marlene and a nomination for Best Play for Stanley, which also won an Evening Standard Award and Olivier Award. In addition, her biodrama with music, Piaf, about chanteuse Edith Piaf, was seen on Broadway in 1981.

Gems made her West End debut in 1976 with Dusa, Fish, Stas and VI. Among her other works are Queen Christina, as well as adaptations of The Seagull, The Cherry Orchard, The Lady From the Sea, and Yerma (written with Denise Black).
