The Book of Mormon Cleans Up at the 2014 Olivier Awards

The 2011 Tony Award-winning Best Musical reprises its success across the pond.

After making its way from Broadway to the West End, The Book of Mormon triumphed at the Olivier Awards on Sunday, April 13. The London production of the politically incorrect musical, written by EGOT winner Robert Lopez (Avenue Q) and South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, took home four awards last night, including the evening's big prize for Best Musical, beating out fellow Broadway hit Once for the title.

Broadway mainstay and Tony nominee Gavin Creel (Hair) earned the award for Best Actor in a Musical, Stephen Ashfield won for Best Supporting Performance by an Actor, and Casey Nicholaw won for Best Choreography, following his 2011 Tony Award win for Best Direction of the musical's Broadway production.

Kyle Scatliffe, who currently plays Enjolras in the Broadway revival of Les Misérables, joined Creel in the Best Actor in a Musical category for his performance in The Scottsboro Boys, helmed by the Tony-winning Bullets Over Broadway director Susan Stroman. The production, however, did not take home any of the six awards for which it was nominated. Once, which also earned six nominations, walked away with two awards, going to Zrinka Cvitešić for Best Actress in a Musical and to Martin Lowe (composition and arrangements) and Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová (music and lyrics) for Outstanding Achievement in Music.

Front-runners Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Merrily We Roll Along, both of which came into the evening with seven nominations, walked away with two awards each. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory won for Best Costume Design and Best Lighting Design, sharing the latter with Chimerica, and Merrily We Roll Along earned the awards for Best Musical Revival and Best Sound Design, also sharing the latter with Chimerica.
