The new musical Fela!, which will end its current run at London’s National Theatre on January 23, will transfer to Sadler’s Wells for a summer run, July 19-August 28. The production is directed and choreographed by Bill T. Jones.

The show is about Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s controversial life as artist, political activist, and revolutionary musician. It features his rousing music performed live onstage by Antibalas and other members of the NYC Afrobeat community, under the direction of Aaron Johnson. The production also features musical arrangements and additional music by Johnson and Jordan McLean.

The musical was initially seen Off-Broadway in 2008, prior to transferring to Broadway, where it received 11 Tony nominations, and won three awards, including for Jones’ choreography. It began its run at the National’s Olivier Theater in November of 2009.

No casting has been announced for the summer run at Sadler’s Wells, which is being billed as part of the musical’s international tour. Tickets for that engagement will go on sale January 24.
