Chicago’s Pride Films and Plays will present Women’s Work Weekend, a weekend of new plays and screenplays with lesbian characters, September 7-11 at the Hoover-Leppen Theater at Center on Halsted.
The scripts to be performed as staged readings are those of the eight finalists in Pride Films and Plays’ Women’s Work contest. The weekend will open with Pat Branch’s Girls Out Loud, September 7, a screenplay focusing on a 30-something cynic who gives up on romantic love and knocks herself up just in time to meet the woman of her dreams. In the play Bad Dog by Jennifer Hoppe-House, September 8, Molly has fallen off the wagon and driven her Audi through the house; when her beleaguered wife escorts her home from the hospital, Molly finds her far-flung, dysfunctional family descending to intervene. Dawn Marie Guernsey’s screenplay The Basement, in which Lena confronts demons from her past, will be presented on September 9. On September 10, there will be a reading of Diane Edington’s screenplay ’70s Shuffle, in which Micki, a straight undercover FBI agent in ’70s NYC, is pursuing fugitive anarchist Gaby.
Also on the 10th, will be a reading of Vanda’s play Patient HM about a lesbian neuroscientist who is haunted by memories of her lost lover. September 11 will bring three performances including the play Raising Ricci by Marilynn Barner Anselmi, in which a lesbian couple returns to their Southern roots looking for healing and acceptance after the death of their son, the screenplay Leap of Faith by Alicia Lomas-Gross, about a timid lesbian Catholic schoolteacher who falls for a student’s devout mother, and Cassie Keet’s play Still Fighting It, a family dramedy which highlights lack of communication when the family’s eldest daughter returns home from college with her serious girlfriend.
