SpongeBob SquarePants Is Coming to Broadway

The Palace Theatre will become Bikini Bottom this winter.

SpongeBob SquarePants, formerly known as The Spongebob Musical, will make its Broadway premiere this winter at the Palace Theatre. Preview performances begin Monday, November 6, with an official opening on Monday, December 4.

The SpongeBob Musical had its world premiere at Broadway in Chicago's Oriental Theatre in 2016. Inspired by the Nickelodeon animated series, the production is conceived and directed by Tina Landau, with a book by Kyle Jarrow, orchestrations, arrangements, and music supervision by Tom Kitt, and choreography by Christopher Gattelli.

The musical features a score by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton (who provides additional lyrics), Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, and T.I., with a song by David Bowie.

The cast includes Ethan Slater as SpongeBob SquarePants, Gavin Lee as Squidward, Lilly Cooper as Sandy Cheeks, and Danny Skinner as Patrick. Additional casting will be announced.

The production will feature scenic and costume design by David Zinn, lighting design by Kevin Adams, projection design by Peter Nigrini, sound design by Walter Trarbach, hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe.
