Last night, UN Ambassador Samantha Power brought a group of ambassadors to a performance of the Tony-winning musical Fun Home at Circle in the Square Theatre. The attendees participated in a post-show discussion on global rights for the LGBT community with Tony-winning book writer and lyricist Lisa Kron, Tony-winning composer Jeanine Tesori, as well as the Fun Home cast, hosted by Tony-winning actress and LGBT activist Cynthia Nixon.
Those present included representatives of the European Union (João Vale de Almeida), Australia (Gillian Bird), Colombia (Maria Emma Mejia Velez), Costa Rica (Juan Carlos Mendoza-Garcia), Croatia (Vladimir Drobnjak), El Salvador (Ruben Ignacio Zamora Rivas), Gabon (Baudelaire Ndong Ella), Mexico (Juan Jose Gomez-Camacho), Namibia (Wilfried I. Emvula), the Netherlands (Karel Jan Gustaaf van Oosterom), Norway (Geir O. Pedersen), the Russian Federation (Vitaly I. Churkin and Irina Churkina), Switzerland (Jürg Lauber), Uruguay (Elbio Rosselli), and Vietnam (Nguyen Phuong Nga).
Inspired by Alison Bechdel's graphic novel-memoir of the same title, Fun Home follows the real-life Bechdel's journey to accept the death of her stern, closeted father, Bruce, while coming to terms with her own sexuality.
The current cast of Fun Home includes two-time Tony Award winner Michael Cerveris, four-time Tony Award nominee Judy Kuhn, 2015 Tony Award nominee Beth Malone, Lauren Patten, Gabriella Pizzolo, Roberta Colindrez, Zell Steele Morrow, Joel Perez, and Oscar Williams, along with Alessandra Baldacchino, Kally Duling, Presley Ryan, Perry Sherman, Jim Stanek, and Nicole Van Giesen.
