Margaret Colin and Boyd Gaines will join the previously reported star John Lithgow in Manhattan Theatre Club’s world premiere of David Auburn’s The Columnist. Daniel Sullivan will direct the production, which will now begin previews on April 4 (one day later than initially announced) at MTC’s Broadway house, the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, with an opening date set for April 25.

The play centers on the syndicated newspaper columnist Joseph Alsop (played by Lithgow), and his place in the Washington political world.

The creative team will include John Lee Beatty (scenic design), Jess Goldstein (costume design), Kenneth Posner (lighting design), John Gromada (original music, sound design), Rocco DiSanti (projection design), and Charles LaPointe (hair & wig design).

Colin will play Susan Alsop, wife of Joseph Alsop. She received a Drama Desk nomination for her performance in MTC’s Defiance, with other credits including Pschopathia Sexualis, Sight Unseen, Arcadia, Old Acquaintances, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, and Jackie. She is also well known for her work on the CW series Gossip Girl.

Gaines will play Stewart Alsop, brother of Joseph Alsop. He is a four-time Tony Award winner, for Gypsy, Contact, She Loves Me, and The Heidi Chronicles. He most recently appeared on Broadway in Driving Miss Daisy.
