In honor of the 76th anniversary of the world premiere of Porgy and Bess, Mayor Thomas M. Menino proclaimed Friday, September 30 as “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess” Day in the City of Boston.

The official presentation took place at a press conference at the Colonial Theatre, hosted by Emerson College President M. Lee Pelton.

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, which features a score by George and Ira Gershwin and a book by DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, is currently playing at Cambridge’s A.R.T. Theatre through October 2, prior to a transfer to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre on December 17.

On hand for the presentation were the members of the show’s cast, including Audra McDonald, Norm Lewis, Phillip Boykin, and David Alan Grier, and director Diane Paulus, along with Chris Cook from the Mayor’s Office, Rich Jaffe from Broadway in Boston, Joe Spaulding of the Citi Performing Arts Center, and representatives from Emerson College and Harvard University.
