In a triumph of appropriate casting, Frenchie Davis, the wildly popular singer unceremoniously dismissed from TV’s American Idol earlier this year, plays spurned singer Effie White in the musical Dreamgirls. In a handy case of art imitating life, Davis’s character Effie is similarly axed from fictional Supremes-like Motown girl group, when it is decided that her full figure is not in keeping with the group’s newly adopted sleek look.
