New York City
Lullabies, composed by Rob Baumgartner, follows four female friends as they chase their dreams and come of age in present day New York City. The central character, Linda, a young poet, is in search of the father she has never known and grappling with finding her own voice in the poetry world. She becomes enraptured up in the life and culture of the city: dive bars, poetry slams, several romantic relationships, and is exposed to a cultural diversity she never knew in the Midwest. It is the culmination of her own experiences and the changes she sees through her friends, that Linda gains a wider scope and appreciation of culture, and finally a fully realized self-identity and self respect that allows her to speak her heart. The music is reminiscent of the ensemble rock musicals of the 60’s and 70’s (Runaways, Innercity, Hair) with influences by contemporary artists such as Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, and Missy Elliot. Songs featured include: “Every Street’s a Legend in the City”, “Anything to Get You Back”, “Heaven”, “No Man”, and “I Wasted My Time”. The cast includes four-time Helen Hayes Award Nominee Jane Pesci-Townsend.
