From the Trenches of the Civil War, They Escaped into an Epic Tale of Revolution…
Set during the Siege of Petersburg, in the waning days of the American Civil War, Clay McLeod Chapman’s Lee’s Miserables follows a group of soldiers in the Army of Northern Virginia. As they are holed up in the trenches, Victor Hugo’s novel Les Miserables begins to take center stage in their lives. Both physically and metaphorically, the book–and characters–of Les Miserables play an integral part in what may well be these young men’s final days.
Post performance discussions are scheduled to follow the Friday evening performances; they are led by Sycamore Rouge’s literary manager, K.B. Saine. Additionally, a number of area historical societies and Civil War interest groups are presenting information and special exhibits in the Sycamore Rouge lobby, including the Quartermaster’s Museum, Pamplin Park, The Museum of the Confederacy, Virginia’s Retreat, Petersburg Battlefield, and the Army Women’s Museum.
