Albert Camus’ play, written in 1938, deals with the cruel reign of Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, third Emperor of Rome, who ruled from 37 to 41. Caligula is the story of a man at once nihlistic and at the same time passionate for the ecstasy of life.
