About This Show

It was 1946 and Paula Fox, age twenty-two, walked up the gangplank of a partly reconverted Liberty Ship with the perennial American hope of finding experience, and perhaps salvation, after the war. Spending the next year moving through war-ravaged cities – London, Warsaw, Paris, Prague, Madrid – as a journalist for a small British news service, Fox now recounts her travels in her new book, The Coldest Winter: A Stringer in Liberated Europe. Her first memoir, Borrowed Finery, was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist and winner of the PEN/Martha Albrand Award. In addition to being a Newbery Award-winning children’s book author, her other novels include Desperate Characters, The Widow’s Children and Poor George. Novelist Sigrid Nunez interviews Fox.
