New York City
An intimate picture of three political hostages of a nameless Muslim terrorist organization– an Englishman, an Irishman and an American — who are struggling with the causes and consequences of their incarceration, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me portrays an earlier stage of the struggle between Arab and the West than the more protracted and violent stage in which we presently find ourselves. While the stakes are obviously high on a personal level for each of the hostages, the randomness of their plights makes them seem more like pawns of a wider Middle East/Arab struggle rather than direct participants.
Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me had its premiere at London’s Hampstead Theatre in 1992. The drama is at times poignantly and absurdly funny as it shows three men stripped down to their most naked of resources. It earned a Tony nomination for Best Play as part of the 1992-1993 Broadway season losing to Angels In America.
