New York City
A foolish but wily servant named Truffaldino attempts to serve two masters in order to earn twice as much food and pay. One master is a woman named Beatrice who masquerades as her brother to find her lover, Floridino, and the other master is Floridino. Truffaldino unknowingly perpetuates the conflict.
THE SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS written by Carlo Goldoni can be credited with removing vulgarity, adding humor, sentiment and realism, humanizing stock characters, and introducing respect for the middle and lower classes and women.
