About This Show

Ma-Yi Theatre Company presents Project: Balangiga, a theatrical reinvestigation of the Balangiga Massacre of 1901, and the current controversy surrounding ownership of three ancient church bells. The show is written by Ralph B.Peña and Sung Rno.

On September 28, 1901, during the Philippine American War, Filipino revolutionaries attacked the American garrison in the town of Balangiga. 47 American soldiers were killed. In retaliation, the Americans were ordered to kill every male resident above the age of 10. Over 50,000 lives were lost. After the campaign, three church bells used by the Filipinos to signal the attack were taken by the Americans. Two of the bells are now in Wyoming. The Philippines has asked for one back. The United States has refused. Who is the rightful owner? Who is the more aggrieved?
