New York City
Romanian/French playwright Matei Visniec’s Progress is the story of how one family deals with the aftereffects of the 1990s civil war in the Balkans. With the family’s return to a ruined home, and their struggle to recover their lives, the play examines how a society where old laws no longer apply becomes the crucible for attempts to reclaim or create a new identity and sense of belonging. Translated by Joyce Nettles, Progress is directed by Ian Morgan.
Progress performs in repertory with Heresy. Presented through HERE’s Supported Artist Program, the production involves two new plays by internationally known writers, both about societies at different stages of implosion and renewal. Excerpts were first presented as part of the Culture Project’s Impact Festival.
