About This Show

Our Country’s Good is set in Australia in 1789. A young Lieutenant is directing rehearsals of what will be the first play ever to be staged in that country: George Farquhar’s Restoration comedy The Recruiting Officer. With only two copies of the text, a cast of convicts (many of whom are illiterate), and a leading lady who is about to be hanged, conditions are hardly ideal for a national premiere. Julia Carey directs.
