Get Thee to a Nunnery Productions presents the New York premiere of Ashley Minihan’s Ophelia as part of the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival. Ilo Orleans directs.
Did Ophelia really go mad and drown herself as Shakespeare would have us believe? Ophelia revisits Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy Hamlet and retells the tale with the other lonely, troubled semi-orphan of Elsinore as the central character. This play is for anyone who ever hoped a tragic heroine might prevail and not perish. Ophelia broaches issues of teenage female identity and the textual innovation of turning Hamlet on its side to look more closely at Ophelia’s character. Is to live in a world of imagination a sign of madness or strength? If imagination comforts but also imprisons, how does one become free?
