Inspired by the New Yorker article “God Doesn’t Need Ole Anthony,” Death Might Be Your Santa Claus is a site-specific work exploring poverty and prosperity in America. Conceived and directed by Lear deBessonet with additional text by Juliana Francis, performances of this site-specific work are at 15 Nassau, a once abandoned bank next to the stock exchange. Pivoting around Ole Anthony, a 68-year-old man in Dallas who leads a group of former homeless and addicts in an undercover spy operation to expose televangelist fraud, the play investigates the intersection of faith and capitalism in contemporary America. Sources include the testimonies of lightning victims, the faith-based merchandise department at Wal-Mart, the oncology ward, internet prayer circles, 1940s musicals, and Tammy Faye.
