In Fields Where They Lay

About the Show

It was The War to End All Wars. It was a Christmas like no other. In Fields Where They Lay tells the incredible true story of the World War One Christmas Truce − the spontaneous ceasefire between British and German soldiers that began with the singing of Christmas Carols on the night of December 24th, 1914.

The play’s extensive use of letters, diaries and newspaper accounts marks the 100th anniversary of the Truce by bringing this stirring and unsettling, hopeful and tragic story to life in the words of the men who lived it. These primary sources are interwoven with the personal stories of a small squad of British soldiers, through whose eyes we experience the horror of life, death and battle in the trenches and the wonder of a sudden outbreak of peace in the midst of one of the bloodiest and most senseless conflicts the world has ever seen.
