The Pearl Theatre Company triggered something of a Marivaux craze when we produced L’Heureux stratagème (The Fine Art of Finesse in Alex Szogyi’s translation) in our 1990/91 season. It is time to revisit what all the excitement was about, with Double Infidelity (La Double Inconstance). Marivaux’ wonderfully light and delicate comedy seems for all the world a soufflé, yet is there a hint that the chef is a cynic, that the delicious taste is fleeting, that the aftertaste is bitter? The clever Marivaux never allows the hint to overpower the pleasure, and leaves the judgment to his audience. And the light touch demanded by French classical comedy is familiar to the troupe after 10 previous dalliances in the genre.
