About the Show

Set in the deceptive idyll of a Catskill retreat, The American Plan unravels the stories of five people who are living within the mass identity of America during the summer of 1960, but very much on the outside looking in. The Catskills was an upscale resort area where people went to relax — some on one side of the lake, some on the other. A wealthy Jewish widow, her daughter and the maid are spending a relaxing summer when a young man enters the scene and eventually starts a relationship with the daughter. The days that follow reveal certain facts about the young man than he had not told before, and when another young man happens by, life takes a significant change for everyone.

Written by Tony-award winning playwright Richard Greenberg, The American Plan looks at life in America when definitions were different. It was a time when being gay meant being happy, when black was a color on Crayolas and when being Jewish often meant you changed your name to Miller.
