About the Show

The world premier of Chevalier-Maurice and Me”, starring Tony Sandler, combines the life story and music of Maurice Chevalier. The legendary life of “France’s Goodwill Ambassador to the World,” is a classic rags to riches story of a young street urchin, born in 1888, who’s Belgian and French upbringing led him into the world of French music halls and, eventually, Hollywood. Maurice Chevalier won the hearts of an entire generation through his love of singing and dancing through both World Wars and well into the 1960’s when he was in his 80’s. Chevalier is best known in the US for his roles in the Academy Award winning film, Gigi (“Thank Heaven for Little Girls”) and scores of other films in the US and Europe (Can-Can, Love in the Afternoon, Count Your Blessings) His hits, “Louise,” “Mimi” and “You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me” were beloved by millions of people.

In addition to the music of Chevalier, the production also addresses the traumatic war years in which Chevalier was a prisoner of war as well as a controversial instrument of the Nazi government. Adored by fans worldwide, Maurice Chevalier’s guiding principal throughout his life was to perform and for his music and joie de vivre to continue to inspire. A quintessential Frenchman, Chevalier was known for is straw boater, cheeky smile and distinctive French accent.
