About the Show

The winner of four new play awards in 2004, Intimate Apparel is a loving and evocative portrait of an African-American woman in New York at the beginning of the 20th Century. Plain and unsophisticated, Esther creates intimate apparel for wealthy socialites–and women of ill repute. Though not exciting, her life is full, but romance continues to elude her until she begins a correspondence with a Caribbean stranger. When he finally arrives in New York, Esther must ask herself if this distant, brooding man is the same person who penned those romantic letters.
