Chicago Opera Theater presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream, featuring music by Benjamin Britten, with libretto by Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears based on the play by William Shakespeare.
Lost in the woods, two mortal couples unwittingly cross paths with feuding fairies and soon find themselves ensnared in their web of mischief. On the orders of Oberon, the king of the fairies, the impish Puck delivers a love potion to the young paramours, but gives it to the wrong person, with chaotic results. Intoxicated by their enchanted surroundings, the crossed couples attempt to untangle themselves, while a lovable troupe of players prepares for a performance of Pyramus and Thisby. All characters find themselves torn between reason and the world of the senses, between the foolishness of mortal life and the boundlessness of imagination until the fairies settle their dispute and put things right again in the mortal world.
COT Resident Conductor Alexander Platt continues his work on the Britten operas with A Midsummer Night’s Dream in a new production by the internationally acclaimed director Andrei Serban.
