New York City
The five surviving letters written home by James R. Foster, real-life whaler and Union soldier, form the basis of this work written by Sag Harbor resident Stacy Dermont. Foster’s letters were written to his “special friend,” Phebe Rogers of Bridgehampton, a woman-child aching for her soldier’s safe return. The text of the letters, juxtaposed with original dialogue, reveals in microcosm the trauma and passion of our country at war.
