About the Show
VENUE: Bad Ladder (Main Space)
1514 N Gardner St
This 90 minute two-hander explores the questions we are too afraid to ask our dying loved ones. Filmmaker Saph has been building a year long documentary interviewing her terminally ill father: They talk about his homeland of Trinidad, various careers, loves and losses. Interjecting ever so often, Saph hopes to build a better memory of the absent dad in front of her.
During their final interview, he has finally agreed to talk about death and the afterlife. Saph becomes increasingly frustrated with her dad for avoiding the questions she really needs to know. Saph’s intrusive memories permeate the interview leading to thought spirals and hellish dreamscapes. However, Saph has to bring up a more pressing topic: She identifies as a man. “Daddy, teach me how to be a man. How do I fill up the space that you will leave? How do I provide for the family you built?”
