Benjamin Scheuer, writer and performer of his autobiographical solo show, The Lion, has been recognized with the 2015 ASCAP Foundation Jamie deRoy & Friends Songwriting Award. The honor will be presented on December 9 at the Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

The Jamie deRoy & Friends Songwriting Award, which recognizes "outstanding work, dedication, and craftsmanship," is awarded annually to a songwriter whose work has been of a "high and consistent level of professionalism." A panel, including representatives from ASCAP, selects the recipient. Scheuer will receive a grant of $1,250.

The Lion is currently running at the Lynn Redgrave Theater through March 29, following a 2014 run at Manhattan Theatre Club's New York City Center – Stage II. The show recently announced that it would tour the U.S.

The Lion is a story of love, loss, family loyalty, and the power of music, which looks back on Scheuer's youth and how he dealt with a verbally abusive father and a diagnosis of cancer in his 20s.
