A one-night only performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music was held Tuesday, April 24 at Carnegie Hall. The evening was a benefit for Carnegie Hall and raised $1.5 million.
Gary Griffin directed the production, which featured a cast led by Laura Osnes as Maria Rainer, Tony Goldwyn as Captain Georg von Trapp, Brooke Shields as Elsa Schraeder, Patrick Page as Max Detweiler, Stephanie Blythe as the Mother Abbess, Cotter Smith as Herr Zeller, Veanne Cox as Frau Schmidt, Reed Birney as Admiral von Schreiber, Nick Spangler as Rolf Gruber, and Mary Michael Patterson as Liesl von Trapp.
The company also included Joy Hermalyn (Sister Berthe), Linda Mugleston (Sister Margaretta), Faith Sherman (Sister Sophia), Joel Hatch (Franz), and Brooklyn Youth Chorus members Jake Montagnino (Friedrich von Trapp), Olivia Knutsen (Louisa von Trapp), Jacob Sutton (Kurt von Trapp), Grace Luckett (Brigitta von Trapp), Natalie Hawkins (Marta von Trapp), Charlotte Knutsen (Gretl von Trap), as well as Christine DiGiallonardo, Daniela DiGiallonardo, Nadia DiGiallonardo, Patty Goble, Amy Justman, Kevin Munhall, and women from the Mansfield University Concert Choir, under the direction of Peggy Dettwiler.
Additionally, cast members from the beloved 1965 film adaptation Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich), Heather Menzies (Louisa), Kim Karath (Gretl), and Daniel Truhitte (Rolf), took part in special cameo appearances.
The concert was conducted by Rob Fisher leading the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. The creative team also included Joshua Bergasse (choreography), Wendall K. Harrington (video and projections), Alan Adelman (lighting consultant), Nevin Steinberg (sound design), Paul Tazewell (costume consultant), and John Lee Beatty (scenic consultant).
