Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, starred in a benefit performance of
Twin Spirits, which was presented by the Culture Project at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Thursday, June 30.
The event, which celebrated the 200th birthday of composer Robert Schumann, was devised and directed for the stage by Tony Award-winner John Caird, and narrated by David Straithairn. It is a poetic meditation on the passionate relationship between composer Robert Schumann (Sting) and wife Clara Wieck (Styler).
Within the piece, their story is illustrated and interwoven with music composed by Schumann, whose spirit was embodied by pianist Jeremy Denk, baritone Nathan Gunn and violinist Joshua Bell — and by Wieck, who was evoked by pianist Natasha Paremski, soprano Camille Zamora, and cellist Nina Kotova.
Guests at the event included actors Richard Kind and Joel Grey; New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg; musicians Denise Rich and Mickey Sumner; broadcast journalist Trish Regan; and Sabrina Holkar, princess of Indore.
A portion of the proceeds from the performance will benefit the Music Unites Youth Choir, bringing together public high school students from across the five boroughs.
