The Off-Broadway Alliance presented the 2nd Annual Off-Broadway Alliance Awards at Sardi's on Tuesday, June 19. The awards honor the commercial and not-for-profit productions that opened Off-Broadway during the 2011-2012 season.
The winners of this year's awards were Tribes (Best Play), Silence! The Musical (Best Musical), MCC Theater's Carrie (Best Revival of a Musical), Fiasco Theater and Theatre for a New Audience's Cymbeline (Best Revival of a Play), Traces (Best Special Event), and Stinkykids, the Musical.
Additionally, Legend of Off-Broadway honors were presented to Forbidden Broadway creator Gerard Alessandrini, actress Kathleen Chalfant (accepted by her daughter, scenic designer Andromache Chalfant), and Perfect Crime star/producer Catherine Russell. Roni and the late Sol Cohen of Genie Printing were awarded the Friend of Off Broadway Award.
In addition, the late Theodore Mann and Howard Kissel were inducted into the Off-Broadway Alliance Hall of Fame. Mann's friend and business partner Paul Libin accepted the honor on Mann's behalf, with Kissel's sister Anne Kissel Elliot accepting her brother's award and Time Out New York theater critic Adam Feldman speaking.
The event was hosted by Off-Broadway Alliance President Peter Breger. Guests included Tribes cast members Jeff Perry, Gayle Rankin, and Nick Westrate, Carrie cast members Christy Altomare, Molly Ranson, and others, Traces producer Amanda Dubois, Stinkykids librettist Sammy Buck, as well as cast members from Silence! and Cymbeline.
