On Monday, October 25, the St. George’s Society presented a benefit reading of Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman’s never-before-staged 1967 television musical,
Evening Primrose, at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College. Tony Walton directed the performance.
The cast was led by Sean Palmer, Jessica Grove, Candice Bergen, John Cunningham, Bill Duell, John Windsor Cunningham, Bethe Austin, Carmen de Lavallade, Frederic Franklin, and Sondra Lee. The reading featured orchestrations by Sean Patrick Flahaven, music direction by Mary-Mitchell Campbell, sound design by Bernard Fox, and lighting design by Richard Pilbrow.
Following the presentation, a gala dinner was held at the top of Hearst Tower. The event featured the talents of Alan Cumming and Jim Dale, and honored Walton and Harper’s Bazaar Editor-in-Chief Glenda Bailey. In addition award grants were given to Tony Award-winning set designer Christine Jones, Lauren Jennings and Young Playwrights Inc., the charity founded by Sondheim.
Celebrity guests at the event included Angela Lansbury, Marian Seldes, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka, Geoffrey Holder, and Mercedes Ellington.
