The cast and creative team of Manhattan Theatre Club’s Broadway production of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People met the press Wednesday, August 8 at their rehearsal studio. Doug Hughes directs the production, which uses a new adaptation by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, and will begin previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on September 4 in advance of a September 27 opening.
Four-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines and Emmy Award winner Richard Thomas lead the company as Dr. Thomas Stockmann and Mayor Peter Stockmann, respectively. The cast also includes Gaines’ wife, Kathleen McNenny, as Catherine Stockmann, Maïté Alina as Petra Stockmann, and Gerry Bamman (Aslaksen), Randall Newsome (Horster), John Procaccino (Hovstad), Michael Siberry (Morton Kiil), and James Waterston (Billing).
In the play, Dr. Thomas Stockmann discovers toxic contamination in the water used at the local baths, and expects to be hailed as a hero. But since the baths are the town’s main source of revenue, the community fights to silence him.
The creative team includes John Lee Beatty (scenic design), Catherine Zuber (costume design), Ben Stanton (lighting design), David Van Tieghem (original music & sound design), J. David Brimmer (fight direction), and Tom Watson (hair & wig design).
