Neil Patrick Harris to Star in U.K. Premiere Production of tick, tick…BOOM!
Neil Patrick Harris will star in the U.K. premiere of tick, tick…BOOM!, the late Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical, which played Off-Broadway in 2001. The new production will begin previews at the Menier Chocolate Factory (53 Southwark Street, London) on May 31 in advance of a June 9 opening and is scheduled to run through September 3. It will be directed by Scott Schwartz, who also directed the Off-Broadway production.
Harris has appeared on Broadway in Assassins, Proof, and Cabaret; he also played the role of Mark in the Los Angeles premiere of Larson’s Rent. Schwartz’s credits include the Broadway production of Golda’s Balcony and the Off-Broadway production of Bat Boy.
tick, tick…BOOM! chronicles the week leading up to the central character’s 30th birthday. We see him dealing with his newly affluent best friend, a girlfriend who wants him to settle down, and a career that he feels is going nowhere. The piece was originally conceived by Larson as a solo show; after his death, David Auburn (Proof) and others refashioned it as a musical for three actors.
