Be More Chill Writer Joe Iconis to Receive 2018 Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award
Be More Chill composer-lyricist Joe Iconis will receive the ASCAP Foundation's 2018 Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award, the organization announced on social media.
The annual award was established to encourage promising young composers of musical theater. It was conceived of by the late Mary Rodgers, daughter of the award's namesake. Since its creation in 1996, recipients have included Jeanine Tesori, Andrew Lippa, Adam Guettel, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Dave Malloy, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, among others.
Alongside Be More Chill, Iconis is the songwriter behind the musicals The Black Suits, Broadway Bounty Hunter, and Bloodsong of Love. Several of his songs, including "Broadway, Here I Come," were featured on the second season of NBC's Smash.
