Carlyle Brown, Ruth Maleczech, Melvin Van Peebles, et al to Receive Otto René Castillo Awards

Carlyle Brown, Ruth Maleczech, and Melvin Van Peebles are among the artists who will receive the Castillo Theatre‘s twelfth annual Otto René Castillo Awards for Political Theatre, to be presented in a ceremony to be held on May 23 at the Castillo.

Other honorees will include the Black Tent Theatre from Tokyo, the Working Classroom from Albuquerque, and David Diamond, who is artistic and managing director of the Headlines Theatre in Vancouver.

The honors are named after the Guatemalan poet and revolutionary Otto René Castillo and recognize the achievement of individuals and theater companies who conceive, produce and foster the development of innovative and socially challenging theater.
