Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' An Octoroon Extends at Soho Rep
The antebellum revamp will begin performances at the end of April.
Soho Repertory Theatre has announced an extension for its world premiere of An Octoroon, written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. The production begins performances April 23 and will now run through May 24, extended from its initial May 18 closing date.
Directed by Sarah Benson, An Octoroon is a meta-melodrama version of the antebellum play The Octoroon, written by Dion Boucicault. The plot is described as follows: "Judge Peyton is dead, and his plantation Terrebonne is in financial ruins. Peyton's handsome nephew George arrives as heir apparent, and quickly falls in love with Zoe, a beautiful 'octoroon.' But the evil overseer M'Closky has other plans — for both Terrebonne and Zoe."
The Octoroon opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1859 and was toured by seven companies, making it second in popularity only to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.
The cast of An Octoroon includes Shyko Amos, Jocelyn Bioh, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Amber Gray, Ben Horner, Chris Myers, Zoë Winters, and Danny Wolohan.
